A SORT OF A SAGA On the night of crober 6, 1950, Thomas E. Dewey, go,•ernor of rhe State of ew York, faced a capacity crowd of rudenr , teachers, dignirarie and area citizen in the Endicou-Johnson Recreation Center in Endicott and for– mally dedicated Harpur College of the State University of New York. With this dedication Governor Dewey began a new chapter in the growth of a college whose roots were fir t planted in 1932, when yracu e University instituted m Extension Division program for area tudenr here in Endicou. In response to the community's obviou need for a full-rime college--which was accentuated by the large number of returning veterans - the university in 1946 6 e tablished Triple Citic College, which opened it doors to an invading army of 9 57 student in October. Dr. Glenn G. Bartle, now Provost of Harpur College, and a full-time faculty of fifty-five, directed a program of fre hman and sophomore work in Liberal Art and Bu i– nc Administration. Classes were held in the Bowc man– sion, now the college Administration Building, and the E- J clubhou es. Vacant lot near the mam building were procured and the pre-fab cia sroom were erected: East Hall in 1946, West Hall in 1947.
