Halfway House "Jim's' building" a year and a half have passed since the rainy day in November when over one thousand students, alumni, faculty members and friends of the University gathered l.o dedicate a fitting memorial l.o James Colby Colgate. For fifty years he had been doing things for Colgate like his father before him. For fifty years his devoted service and loving interest had guiJed, had led, had assisited. By this time it was different. Now Colgate was doing something for him. Friends of Colgate had given Colgate's best friend a memorial. nder the leadership of Dr. Cutten, president of the niversity, and Mr. George Cobb, chairman of the Committee of Ways and 1eans for the Student Union Building, students, faculty, alumni, trustees, and friends were quick l.o acknowledge their love for "Jimmy" by their wholehearted support of a project which would in some small way commemorate their gral.itude. "Jim's' building" !.he unifying importance of the Student Union Building is an apt symbol through which to honor "Jim." tudenLs eat there long needed boarding faci li– ties accommodate freshmen and non-fraternity men. Students play there- ping pong and pool tables are at the service of all. Sl.udents gather there soda fountain, posl. office, reading, and lounging facilil.ies inl.egrate the various functions of student life. Students meet there the first and l.hird flo01·s contain nine offices available for extra-curricular ac– tivities in which meel.ing can conveniently be held. Dcfe•·red rushing has been made possible by the tudent Union building. Freshmen can now be accommodated in the main dining room which holds five hundred person . Be– sides becoming !.he crossroads of Colgate life il. has afforded the freshmen the opportunity to live together as a group during thei•· firs( year in college. A rebirth of clas inl.erest seems a definite r suit accompli heel by the new building. With spring rushing the percentage of mistakes in choosing a house ha been greal.ly le enecl. The freshmen have time l.o consider the fraternity ituation and the fratemilies have a chance to let the freshmen prove !.hem– selves. "Jim's' building" .·es, a ear and a half have passeJ since !.bal. rainy Novemberday, but the l.ime has onl,v increased the benef,{s reaped from the Student Union. It has grown into !.he very fibre of Colgate life. rt. has consolidated Colgate and stands as a fitting monu– ment l.o the man to whom it is dedicated and to the spirit by which it was made possible.
