Hamburg High School 1965 Yearbook (Hamburg, AR) - Full Access

28 CLASS HISTORY In 1953 the first crop of post-war babies--120 in number--entered the Hamburg Schools. We made history from the begilming as this was the largest class ever enrolled in our schools. That same year we made our first debut before society in our Spring Festival of Flowers. By the time we were in the third grade, the officials decided there were just too many of us for three teache1·s so we were divided into four groups. Friends left friends as some of us bravely marched up to the 11 big 11 school to be with the older students. We made it okay until we got in the sixth grade; then the romances began to bud. We had our class picnic at Chemin-a-haut Park and the Safety Patrol picnic when the little boys sat with the girls for the first time. We were big in the sixth grade, but in the seventh we were destined to be little kids again as the upperclassmen looked down on us. We were low man on the totem pole, but big in our own estimation because the girls had dropped t~e hems of their dresses down to the calves of their legs. (They are back up now.) That is also when all the boys wore taps on their shoes and sauntered down the side– walks making the sparks fly. All the little kids looked at them and marveled. Going steady was the thing in senior high. Mrs. Phillips wouldn't let us dance backstage between numbers at the talent show. Students buzzed around in cars because they had just turned sixteen. THE event of our junior year was held May 8, when we entertained the seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet in the gym. After these wonderful and exciting fun -packed years, 85 11 Sophisticates 11 will take the last step on the road of their high school education when we walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas on May 24.
