WALTER J. YINGST We the members of the staff of the Alexis dedicate this volume to you as an expression of our appre– ciation of your long and distinguished service to the school and community and as a token, as well, of the admiration and affection in which you are held by the students of Alexis I. duPont.
Six years have brought many changes in your lives and in the world in which you live. Many of you entered high school eager and willing to learn but unsure of the direction in which you were going . During these high school days, some of you hove discovered yourselves, your interest, your special abilities, and now ore ready to enter into higher fields of learning or the working world . Some ore still hesitant and baffled by outward and inward conflicts. Into whichever group you fall, our sincere hope is that you hove learned to think rationally, to practice self-control, that you hove developed a sense of responsibility and an awareness of the values of our democratic way of life. If you hove at– tained these values, you will be worthy of adult, intelligent citizenship. Use your every ability, make the most of each opportunity that you may become a credit to yourself, your community, and your notion. With the advent of the Notional Honor Society, a new organiza – tion about to be added to our high school program, comes new and added responsibilities for our student body. Most people, when they think of this area, look upon it as one which encompasses only the academic side of the students life. This is true only to a certain extent, since membership is also based upon Service, leadership and Character as well as Scholarship. It is not just a happenstance for all four of these most desirable characteristics are the ingredients which make for the kind of school citizen who is a credit to himself and the school he represents. I wish to humbly give my thanks to those who chose to nome this new organization for me and for the rich rewording experiences which I hove been given the privilege of having during the past twenty years as a member of the A. I. family. let us go forward together to make this a real Honor Society remembering that a high school education should produce well -rounded personalities. DR. THOMAS W HOWIE S11permtm dmt MR•.
