Striking Season SPHS Bowlers Pin Down Competition The concentration was intense. He walked slowly toward the lane. He released the ball and watched it roll rapidly towards the pins. He leaned to the left hoping that the ball would move with him. The ball hit the pins and it was a strike. Bowling, competitively or just for fun, took hours of practice. "Bowling is hard work," explained senior anchor bowler Ken Gray. "It takes a lot of technique and concentration to bowl a great game." Many of the practices consisted of exercises that were made to improve technique. "In practices, we worked on picking up spares," stated first year coach Sandra Heidt. "I enjoy working with the kids . It gives a different aspect than teaching," continued Mrs. Heidt. Karen Calhoun and Heather Klemme were the anchor bowlers for the girls' team, which came in fifth place in the county. For the boys' team, Ken Gray was the dominant bowler and as an individual bowler, he came in third place in the city. Bowling is sometimes considered a sport for leisure, but for these hard working athletes, the thrill of winning was the payoff. -Stephanie Todd
