L I I 160 • Academics/DEES anguage: the Medium in which we exist Communication was the major link between humans. For some, eloquence was easy, but many wanted a communication class where they could practice and refine their language skills. The Department of Education for Exceptional Students formed a program that worked on improving the students' skills in communication and language. "My students want to improve their communicative skills,'' explained Mrs. Claudia Miller. She continued, "We spend a lot of time discussing current events, decision making, and goals for the future." Because of the concern expressed in current events, these students helped prepare "care packages" that were sent to the troops in the Above: That's Right! Mrs. Miller encourages Brian Caphart to explain the problem to Chantell Leffard, Deanna Owens, Lashun Jackson and Nidia Archer. Right: Great Job! Mrs. Miller and Dennis Black discuss his results on the last test. Middle East. It made me happy to be part of a major event in which I'm helping someone," expressed Adam Bowman, who greatly enjoyed giving his time to help with the packages. Mrs. Miller felt that expression was important in a person's self evaluation. She enjoyed working with the students because she knew that they wanted to broaden and enhance their communication skills with others. "I can talk to her, my friends, and teachers now more efficiently. I know that Mrs. Miller will be there to help me if I need her. She's like a mom to me," commented Chris Potts, who expanded his communication skills greatly. Yashecca Hawkins stated, "Mrs. Miller is very considerate and patient with me. She doesn't give me too much pressure when she knows that I'm doing my best. I like that a lot." These students were no different than anyone else who attended SPHS, except for that little extra help that Mrs. Miller and their classmates were able to provide. "My goal is to have each student understand that they are an important part of society and that they will have choices in determining what their future will be. They can be successful ... it's their decision," finished Mrs. Miller, who believed that all students could accomplish their goals in life. - Cara Capucci
