G etting Physical is the Focus Every Day I I Here, on the campus of St. Pete High, many students entered into the "Physical Education Zone." They experienced the sweat, the aches and pains, the stress of a one hour workout, five days a week. Each student changed clothes, sat in a squad for roll call and then joined the activity in which all were participating. Senior Melanie Cordier, who attended the course Team Sports II, stated, "I enjoy playing team activities, but I only took the class because I need the credit to graduate." While some students took P.E. for the credits, many attended P.E. courses to remain in shape. Junior Micheal Gross commented, "I feel much better when I am involved in an active performance." Each student had a different idea about what could be done to make I II .. Above: Head's up. Dan DiRoma waits for Jason Gensheimer to serve the tennis ball into play. Right: Mighty, mighty Devil. Allyn Hane easily lifts the weight and works on building a stronger body. Far Right: Who's on first? Jason Glatfelter assists his team by catching the ball and getting Nathanael Gay "out" on first. 170 • Academics/Physical Education P.E. more entertaining for those who didn't enjoy the hour in the hot sun. "Teachers could try to make the activities equal between both the girls and the guys so they will enjoy the activity and want to be involved," explained junior Matt Reed, who felt that P.E . would further help him in sports. One of the unique characteristics of physical education was that it wasn't a structured indoor class. "I feel that it gives the students a chance to relieve the stress caused by the regular school day," said Coach Dusty Boylson, who enjoyed teaching outside. J en VanSant, a freshman who had Beginning Aerobics stated, "It is a chance to get fresh air after being in a classroom all day." Even if the students didn't admit to it, physical education gave them a better education in body fitness and exercise. Coach Jamie Baby summed up the program of physical fitness education, "It's a good work ethic and it gives the students a greater value in taking care of their bodies and minds." Whether the students took the course for the credit or for the plain enjoyment of keeping their bodies in shape, each student gained an understanding of physical education fitness and the opportunity for interacting with other students outside of the classroom, in the "Physical Education Zone." - Cara Capucci
