p I I 176 • Academics/Social Studies reparation for the Future Includes Our Past From the pilgrims and the Indians, to George Washington and George Bush, we studied history. From the Revolutionary War to the unrest in the Mideast, we looked at conflict. At SPHS, students enrolled in both Mr. Jim McCauley's American History and Mr. Ed Foley's Advanced Placement American History courses to learn more about the society in which we live. "In this course, I cover American History from the explorers to modern day events," stated Mr. McCauley. "I try to spice up the lectures by adding little stories and anecdotes of my own." "I like the way Mr. McCauley teaches," commented Cristy Piper. "His stories make the Above: Identifying Relationships. Dana Evans works diligently on the assignment given by Mr. McCauley. Left: The Sioux Indians ... Mr. McCauley explains some of the important details of the explorers crossing the great plains. class more interesting and relaxed, but we still learn a lot." Stacey Devald agreed, "Mr. McCauley's stories are funny, and they are also tied into what he's teaching. He talks to us on our level, not on the textbook's level." For those students that wanted to learn American History on a college level, SPHS also offered an Advanced Placement (AP) American History course, taught by Mr. Ed Foley. "This class attracts students that are really interested in history," stated Mr. Foley. "There is also college credit given to those students who pass the Advanced Placement exam at the end of the year. '' "Mr. Foley really motivates us to work hard," declared Jamie Grove, "and the fact that we take AP looks really good on college transcripts." John Green agreed, "Whether you pass the AP exam or not, colleges see that you attempted the course." Whether we were earning college or high school credit, all SPHS students learned about American History. We learned about our roots, and we were learning about our future, too. - Michelle Dilley
