''Th~P!J:!:I?.Q~~ of Ethos is environmental preservation in conjunction with community services. The members of Ethos try to participate in one activity per month during the school year," said Karen. Ethos took part in the "National Coastal Cleanup," an annual event which>sponsored a group of citizens that cleaned up litter from America's beaches. This project benefitted the environment, as did the club's "Earth Day" activities in April, and the projects for "t:'!I!3-t~Qn~l Rainforest Wee.k" in October. "The rainforests, down in the Amazon area, play an important role in the earth. They need to be preserved," said Melissa Mooney, historian. In service to the community, Ethos members partiCipated in the CROP Walk, created to raise awareness about world hunger. "We go out and get people to sponsor us. Then we walk, like In a marathon. When we walk a certain distance, the sponsors giye :qs the amount they owe. It's for a good cause, and it's fun," said Vice-President Laurie Freeman. In November, Ethos volunteered at the Festival of Trees, and in December, members went to nursing homes for Christmas caroling. In the spring they joined in the March of Dimes Walkathon, and during Teacher Inservice Days, Ethos provided babysitting for teachers with children. Aside from these service projects, Ethos tried to teach environmental awareness to the students at SPHS. Ethos members believed that we all could be part of the solution that would make our world a better place. - Joanne Haley
