The Pinellas County School System committed itself to finding a way to balance the racial tensions. They organized an Advisory Committee in each middle and high school throughout the county which consisted of 10 students, 5 blacks and 5 non-blacks. The hour long meeting was to be held monthly during second period. Our first meeting of the year was held in late September. Various issues were discussed as the 10 students gathered around the table in the conference area. "I think that a positive step has been made to maintain racial harmony," said Mr. Grey. "Lack of understanding, communication, and sensitivity is the cause of racial prejudice." He continued, "The committee is designed to bring the students together to talk about racial problems." Adrienne Garrett, an interested sophomore , agreed with Mr. Grey. "All the races need to get to know each other and become friends. I think that's what's needed now," she commented. Eric Brown agreed, "II we could maintain communication among a~ people, prejudice would be a thing of the past." The members seemed to take their positions seriously. "I'm glad I was chosen to serve," said Eric, "! feel I can make a difference.'' - Patricia Sanden
