Blackmar, who began leaching at Columbu High chool at mid·term, i fa cing, among other problems that loom hefore all new teacher , be oming familiar with school rule , cu tom , and the newne of the chool building itself. o one e capes four year of English. The stu– dents at Columbus High School are more familiar with English than with any other ubject; everyone i required to take it for four years. From Lady of the Lake in their fre hman year to Henry Esmond in their senior year, they enjoy literature. From direct objects as a sub-fre h– men to cognate objects as juniors and enior they trug– gle through grammar. Grammar i taught in all four grade for correct– ne s in both oral and writtt:n work. Literature i taught to give the tudent an under tanding of the writing of va· rious author and a tudy of the development of our culture and histor . American author and their writings are studied the freshman and junior year and Engli h, their soph(,mOrt' and enior years. Various method are u ed by the teacher to stimulate' inlere t and to promote learning in their Engli h cia ses. Among these are film , photograph , artwork, record , field trip , reports and conte t . The e conte t range from the Vocabee on word and definition ability to the es ay contest on soil con_ervation. A research theme is required in both the junior and enior year , and a monthly book report aids a tudent in probing deeply and in learning on hi own.
