Hawley, who ha been in tructing th tudent at CH in the cia ical Latin culture and grammar for th pa t four year , i preparing to implify for h r tudent th ta k of conjugating a difficult vprl- From Rome to Madrid to Paris travel Columbu High students who are taking languages. The e students meet many interesting characters, such as Julius Cae ar, Emil, a small French boy and Picaro, a very ob tinate Spanish donkey. The taking of languages at Columbus High has two a pects, cla ical languages and modern language . The classical language branch includes Latin. The Latin cla es here have the largest registration of any public high school in the nited States. The purposes of teach– ing Latin are to make this language available a a tool in under tanding our own language in both structure and vocabulary and to familiarize the pupil with Roman life, cu toms and literature. The modern languages, French and Spani h, have a their purpo e to gi e the student the ability to both read and speak the language as it is u ed in everyday life. Many tongue are twi ted and mouth are puckered as students make a gallant ef– fort to pronounce difficult French and pani h word . We must all agree that at Columbu High chool languages make lingui t . The e lingui ts may go on to college and afterwards hold positions in the nited a– tions or even be interpreters in foreign countries. Others may use this knowledge only while traveling in another country, but all will have acquired an under tanding and re pect for a country, it people and its problem . 673 students take languages. fr .
