Elgin High School 1964 Yearbook (Elgin, IL) - Full Access

Students gather on the front steps awaztmg buses or just talking, comparing homework assignments, or who's taking whom out Friday night. "First come, first seated," is the bus policy. Students haue to scram– ble for choice seats or to sit next to friends. Occasionally a student is a little slow in getting out of school. Consequently, he has to flag down his ride home. Elgin High School serves students in Wayne, Bartlett, West Chi– cago, and other outliving districts besides the Elgin students. Many of these student ride buses provided by the school system. Every morning and afternoon buses are lined up along the curb either unloading or loading. These students gather on the steps awaiting their buses. Other student provide their own transportation to school. Many of them drive. All cars driven to school must be registered with Mr. Quillman and have an EHS sticker on the windshield. All the cars, however, do present a problem. There is ne er adequate parking space. Still other students walk-yes, there are a few. Some walk to keep in shape; others walk because they don't· have a ride. The latter reason is probably the most common one. In winter it gets pretty cold, but the bus students contend nothjng could be colder than the buses. 17 Although the parking problem may not be quite this bad, it seems like it to many late arriuers.
