HARD-HITTING SPARTANS The 1983 East Ascension Spartans opened their season on a sour note. The East St. John Wildcats defeated the Spartans 12-7 at the Jambalaya Jamboree. The next week, E.A. faced a strong Lutcher team. The Spartans jumped out to an early 9-point lead , but a couple of costly turnovers gave Lutcher the lead going in at halftime . In the second half, the Bulldogs continued to hold the Spartan offense at bay, while the defense could not contain the elusive Lutcher backs. Lutcher won 26-9. The Baker Buffaloes then traveled to Gonzales to take on a fired-up Spartan team. Though the Buffs were heavily favored , E.A. played a flawless game and came away with a 14-9 win, to keep the Mayor's Trophy for a second consecu– tive year. The Spartans displayed tough defense and ball– control offense to subdue the Buffaloes. Plaquemine was E.A.'s first away game . It was also a very big win. Before the night was over, the Spartans had coasted to a 20-0 victory. E.A.'s defense played an awesome game, holding the Green Devils on a fourth-an-inches at the goal line . 104 East Ascension opened its district play at home with a 27· 7 loss to the powerful Capital Lions. Again, costly turnovers deep in their own territory caused E.A.'s demise . The McKinley Panthers were the Spartans' next foe. E.A. totally dominated the undermanned Panthers. The Spartan offense produced six scores on their way to a 48-6 blowout. East Ascension took another district tumble with a 21-14 loss to the Rebels of Lee High. The first half showed a close game, but an interception return for a touc~down gave Lee momentum. The Spartans scored on the last play of the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the defecit. The Spartans then traveled to Olympia Stadium to face the Broadmoor Buccaneers. E.A. had defeated the Bucs the previous two years to take consecutive district crowns, but Broadmoor came through with an interception late in the game to preserve their lead. Broadmoor won 20-13. If you were looking for offense at the E.A.-Tara game, it was nowhere to be found. What was there, was outstanding defense. The Spartans scored on a field goal late in the third quarter and held the Trojans' offense the rest of the way to
