Situated in a suburban residen– tial setting in wealthy Montgomery County, Walt Whitman opened it doors in September of 1962. A temporary shuf· flina of the County's classes gave the school grades 9, 10, and 11 during its first year, so that the first graduating class departed in the late spring of 1964. Following the commencement of its first graduating class, the school re– ceived a high accreditation by the Middle States Association of CoUeges and Secondary Schools. Walt Whitman High School, in it fir t five years, has e tabli hed it reputation as one of the nation's outstanding econdary schools. A precedent of academic excellence in faculty and student body has distinguished Walt Whitman High School. Approx– imately ninety per cent of the students continue their educa– tions at colleges and univer ities throughout the country. Extending their knowledae and talent bevond Walt Whit– man, tudents enter inter- chool and national competitions. Whitman's "It's Academic" teams of 1965 and 1967 cap· tured the Washington area championship. For the past two year , Whitman was repre ented by three semifinalists and one of the forty national finali ts in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search. The Mathletes took the County championship in 1965, and the junior var iLy debate team led the County for three consecutive years. Artistic talent distinguished Whitmanites in the National Scholastic Art Contest in 1966. The Class of 1967 boasts 27 National Merit finalist , over one-fourth of the County's total. An exten ive athletic program ha complemented the aca– demic curriculum. Enthu ia tically upported by the tudent , the Varsity basketball team has out cored opponents game after crame. The 1966 ea on, the mo t succec; ful in Whit– man' hi tory, was climaxed with a heartbreakina lo by one point to Richard Montgomery in the Counly champion– ship playoff. In 1966 and 1967, the Varsity tennis team won the County title. Earlier in Whitman's history, the 1964-65 season wa marked by runner-up County trophie for the soccer, cross country, and baseball teams. The opening years of a high school are but the foundation upon which future cia e will build. For Whitman the first five years have signalled the succe es of future years. Walt Whitman High School, in a hort time, has establi hed its reputation in Montgomery County, in the State of Mary– land, and in the United States.
