Politically con cious of the nation and the state, the stu– dent body taged mock elections. To acquaint the students with pecific candidates and i sues, the SGA sponsored two a semblies featuring opposing candidates for the U. S. House of Repre entative , Republican Gilbert Gude and Democrat Royce Hanson. Each then faced a panel of students with a list of que tion gathered from the ocial studies classes. Local politician David Scull, Republican, and Rita David· son and ldamae Garrett, Democrats, responded to que tions concerning Montgomery County's government. When the ballots were counted and the final results tabulated Whitman ocial studies tudents accurately forecast the gubernatorial returns by "electing" future governor Spiro T. Agnew by an overwhelming 80%. Ironically, Whitman was the lea t prophetic about the conte t between the two men who poke personally to the school. Contradictory to the voter in Maryland's Eighth Congre ional District, stu· dents cho e Royce Hanson over Gilbert Gude, again by 80% of the vote ca t. peaker Gilbert Gude expound on the glorie o( nnapoli to Whit– man's tudent body.
