Filina record , running errand and de1ivering me · ages filled the hour the a i ant pent in the office. Record of college application were kept by nior auid– ance office a i tant for u e by Whitman' coun elor . The girl compiled in a loose-leaf binder li t of applicant to each college or univer ity. Each enior' reque t for tran- cript and recommendation were filed and numbered in the order received. For the benefit of college-hunting tu– dent , the a i tant maintained a calendar of college con· ference date and a bulletin board of brochure announcing cholar hip program . The girls al o an wered the telephone and delivered messages for the coun elor . To relieve orne of the tremendou load carried by the guidance counselors and a i tants, the use of computers for cla cheduling wa innovated in the guidance depart– ment for the cbool year 1967-1968. Each of Whitman's two thou and students reque ted six cour e , and the com– puter in Rockville took on the rna ive job of compiling two thou and fea ible schedule of ix periods. The com– puter cannot take care of everything, however: all chedule complaints ar~ till the headache of the auidance coun elors and a i tant .
