New Year Brings End To First Semester January was the month of endings and beginnings. As the erne ter clo ed with three day of dreaded exams, good intention for next term were vowed in ew Year's resolu– tion . But for the Senior there wa a school-wide sigh of relief a Senior Slump began. The la t college entrance examination , the Achievement te t , were over and anxious students awaited their acceptances in April. now torm meant unexpected vacations, weekend ki trip , and tailed car to many Whitmanites. In January, the dome wa crowned with now and succe . The winning ba ketball team brought out bright pink boo ter button , pectator ·, and lot of school pirit. The John Peter Altgeld Society, Whitman's open mem– ber hip organization, ponsored peaker in area of special interest includina free peech, open hou ing, and the war in Vietnam. Mr. William Hiag , an expert on academic freedom, and Mr. Charles Jone from the Action Co-ordinat– ing Committee to End Segregation in the Suburbs (ACCES , held discu ions with Whitman students. Faculty strikes and requests for course in Communism are controver– ial topic discu ed by Mr. William Higgs, a Washington lawyer. Although lacking gloves, boots, and scarves, Allison Biresall doesn't hesitate to enjoy the snow while wajting for her tardy bus. With two mmutes and forty Physics que tions left on hi Achievement test, Senior Kirk Murrell begin to work anxjously. 29
