Calvetto. Armed with flag and megaphones, the cheerleader con tantly encouraged Viking pride and chool pirit. Wear– ing uniform to chool before weekend games, the group of "Friday Co tume Girl " worked hard to boo t chool loyalty. elling "bottled school pirit" wa but one of the idea they developed. To add extra PZAZZ to athletic event , pep rallies were organized featuring the ever-heroic Odin, the Viking god of victory. A Whitman repre entatives, the cheerleader attended all football, occer, and ba ketball games, wrestling matche , and, for the first time, cro country meet . In a erie of three tryout , ix enior and four Junior were elected for the quad on the ba i of ability, teacher ' recommenda– tion , scholar hip and general appearance. Practice were held throughout the ummer to perfect football cheer ; when chool began, the quad practiced every ixth period and on Wednesday afternoon . The move of one cheerleader's family to Texas reduced the quad to nine girl ; three-year-old Kathy Ripley was then "adopted" a a miniature RAH RAH. A third factor which made this squad unique wa the de– cision to elect two captain : Mary Ann Phelps for football season and Jeannie Cockrell for ba ketball sea on.
