Ann Arbor High School 1962 Yearbook (Ann Arbor, MI) - Full Access
Study of ideas and 14 communication "The English Department is the largest department in the high school, with twenty-two teachers, five of whom are new this year. The department of– fers instruction in both litera– ture and composition. We study all types in literature: the novel, the short story, poetry, the es– say, biography and autobiogra– phy. "Our objectives in literature are to present both classic and modern selections with a view to inculcating a love of read– ing, both for the acquisition of knowledge and for pure enjoy– ment, to show the mores of the culture which the students are studying, and to reveal the riches of the past and the prom– ises for the future. "In composition we teach the basic techniques of writing and the refinements of rhetoric: unity, coherence, logic, and em– phasis. "Apart from the regular En– glish classes, both for the college preparatory student and the student who does not plan on a higher education, we offer many special classes: journal– ism, debate, drama, and radio. For the gifted student there are accelerated and advanced place– ment classes, and for those whose reading ability is limited, there are classes for remedial reading."
