Kelley Rea making the catch Another close game (7-0), resulted one week after the Pioneers' defeat by Sexton. This time our footballers were on the long end of the score. The Ann Arbor defense was tough, in– tercepting three passes and recovering two fum– bles. Campbell scored the lone touchdown with sophomore Tom Morrow making the extra point conversion good. The homecoming game of 1961 ! More than likely people recall the thrilling finish of the game that Ann Arbor eventually won 18-14. Skip La Roe, the senior quarterback, scored two touchdowns, the first coming on a run from Lansing Eastern's fourteen yard line. Both P. A.T.'s of Tom Morrow's were blocked. The ex– citing climax came with about twenty-one sec– onds left. Eastern had possession of the ball and Ann Arbor was losing 14-12. It was the last play of the game and all looked lost for the Pioneers. Kelly Rae charged the ball carrier and put a hard tackle on him. The ball squirted from the Eastern man's hands and Six-A Standings w L Pts. People were still talking about the fabulous game the week before when the Pioneers visited Ypsilanti to try to pick up their sixth win. Ypsi, on the other hand, had different ideas about this as they beat our Ann Arbor team 20-6. This marked the first victory by Ypsi over the Pioneers in twelve years. Ann Arbor's only touchdown came on a thirty-yard pass from LaRoe to Pittman. The last game of the year is always a sad event but the Ann Arbor team brightened things up a little by defeating Jackson 45-0. It was Ann Arbor all the way as the Pioneers ended the season with a 6-2 win-loss mark, good enough for second place in the 6-A. Pitt– man and Campbell scored two touchdowns apiece, while sophomore Pat Koeller scored one touchdown as did Skip LaRoe and Fred jackson.
