CROSS COUNTRY During the past three years, the Ann Arbor High cross– country team has ruled the 6-A league by winning three straight championships. Again this year, with the great run– ning of the seven varsity boys, the Pioneers successfully de– fended their championships by placing first in the 6-A cross– country meet at Ypsilanti. Much of the team's success is due not only to the fine coaching of Mr. McEwen but also stems from the excellent leadership of co-captains Jim Pier– pont and Dale Loy. Bill Johnston was the "big gun" of the team with Len Joeris and Wolfgang Lugauer close behind. Along with this trio were Mike Jackson, Bill Padgett, Dale Loy, and J im Pierpont. Losing only once to a strong Ypsilanti team, the harriers downed their other opponents by a comfortable margin. In the Ypsilanti meet, held here at the high school, Bill Johns– ton set a new Ann Arbor High record for the two-mile course of 10:17.4. This year the J.V.'s showed that Ann Arbor will have an– other good team next year, even though six of the first seven runners are graduating. Excellent running by Scott Hunter (who ran on the varsity for two meets), Jon Dayton, Bob Lillie, and Jack Hoisington, led the junior varsity to many victories. Forty runners, many of them sophomores, turned oqt for practice at the beginning of the year. Next year they will have the valuable experience that will aid them in bet– ter running. The team will have fine leaders again next year as Len Joeris and Bob L illie are the co-captains elect. 45
