Barbara Brenner Editor-in-Chief Pecking typewriters screeching editors, moaning reporters, and the flapping of dictionary pages are just a few of the varied vibrations heard erupting from The Optimist room at deadline time. Pages are assembled, headlines are writ– ten, photos are cropped, and ads are gathered. As tension mounts, and nerves knot, the final stages of The Optimist begin to merge into a publication which has behind it forty-one years of tradition. The Optimist, fathered by Mr. Robert Granville, present chairman of the En– glish Department, first appeared in 1921. The objectives of this original publi– cation have been maintained through the years; these objectives being to serve as an enlightenment for the student body and the community. During the past year, 1961-'62, The Optimist has made many advances un– der the leadership of Editor-in-Chief, Barbara Brenner, the Editorial Board, and the business and ad staffs. 52 Jeanne Bader, Barbe Stanley, Barb Brenner, Carole Crumley, and Bob Neau begin work on the first page of the Optimist.
