Counselors Mix Patience, Understanding Making out schedules takes a lot of time and thought. Mr. Henry Wholihan helps Millie Piper to plan ahead. Mrs. Joy Atten Mr. Gerald Bennett Although counselors are an important part of every student's school life, many people do not realize the requirements a person must meet to become a counselor. These people must have either a master's or a doctor's degree, a minimum of 15 hours in graduate school in guidance and counseling, and at least 3 years teaching experi– ence with adolescent children. A counselor's job is not an easy one. At the start of each semester there are weeks of hectic work, making schedules, changing schedules and taking care of the thousand other details that are associated with the beginning of school. This work is carried on throughout the semes– ter, too. Disciplining students and keeping attend– ance records takes up a lot of time. These are not the most important duties of the counselor, though. His main function is to help students achieve their maximum potential and to help them prepare for their future. This is done through program– ming, testing, conferring with students, recom– mending them for jobs and honors, and helping them apply for scholarships.
