Sptaking on current discussion topics is part of a typical day in a ci~·ics classroom. Here Laura Svoboda givts a speech on American currency. Mr. William Hahn feels that this activity helps a sllldent learn more about his country. This year's social studies depart– ment has made the time educational as well as exciting for many students. Mr. Donald Henry, Mr. William Hahn and Mr. James Brennan enliv– ened the classroom civics and econ– omics lessons for 171 students by es– corting them to the state's capitol. The day started with a train ride to Lan– sing from Plymouth, Michigan, where the students were introduced to Judge Cavanagh, a Supreme Court Justice. The trip ended with a meal at Michigan State and a tour of the campus. One of the new programs continued in the social studies department this year was the youth-work program in which Mr. Malcolm Campbell's sec– ond hour class participated. They dis– cussed the problems and evaluated the role of industry with executives. The program ended with a tour of the Micromatic Corporation. The American history classes car– ried on their usual function of helping students learn the history of their coun– try. Through this knowledge the Cody student can realize what his country stands for and how its ideals in American democracy are carried out. Here Mr. Ernest Smith discusses current events in a 12A economics class. Through this activity a student can learn, and benefit by knowing, what is going on in the world around him, and he can see how other people react. 35
