Social Studies Stage Extra Events Cody students seem to be enjoying themselves on their civics trip to Lansing. Th ey are seated in the balcony of the House of R epre- sell/olives. Studellls felt the capitol was in good condition consider– ing its age. This year many Cody students found themselves listening and enjoying discus– sions by outsiders which were provided by the social studies department. The chief event was the trip to Lan– sing where students had a chance to talk to representatives Walton and Lacata of the 18th and 19th districts. After the dis– cussion with these two men Cody stu– dents were introduced to Chief Justice Thomas Cavanagh where he explained why Michigan has only eight Supreme Court Justices. Another event which took place this year was the speech by former governor of Michigan G. Mennen Williams. He discussed such topics as the war in Viet ~am, the problem of South African na– tions and the racial issues in America. The Speaker's table is probably the most important desk in the House for from this table the Speaker can con– trol the sessions of the legislalllre. This year was just one of many years in which the social studies department spopsored outside events. 36
