Check These Knights Out The Chess Club made a strong comeback. After al– most ten years, Knights put together their best players and jumped back into the competition. In their first competition against Moriar– ty, Del Norte took first, astounding the longtime chess competitors. The "Knight Mates" Chess Team finished tied for second place with Albuquerque Academy at the New Mexico High School and Youth Open Championships, Novice Di– vision on Saturday, February 19 at Highland and finished with a 4-1-1-record. Led by Theo Christenson with three wins and a draw in the four rounds of play, the Knights won a total of twelve games. Tim McKenzie, An– tonio Courtney, Shawn Irish, and Jesse Slater won two games each and Mike Ferree won one. Michael Carrie was also one of the top players. Sponsors were Don Cain, Art Liberatore, and Robert Brown. The team met at lunch eve– ry Tuesday and Thursday for formal matches and through– out the rest of the week. At meetings, there was constant competition for board posi– tion. The team is open to all students with a 2.0 G.P.A. or better. Next year promises to be a strong one with nearly all players returning. Knight Mates will them move up to A level competition. Chess Club The ches team practice before a match.
