The DN football team, which entered the season unranked, improved dra– matically after a sluggish tart. Behind a solid de– fense and a consistent of– fense, they gradually gained control of the dis– trict. Back to back shut– outs of Los Lunas and West Mesa clinched the title. The Knights' coaching team included Head Coach David Williams, Offensive Coordinator Rick Phillips, Defensive Coordinator Randy Sim– mons, and Receivers Coach Billy Ward. At the end of the season, Wil– liams was named Coach of the Year by the Albu– querque Coaches' Asso– ciation. "The '93 football squad provided great spirit and enthusiasm for Del Norte," said Coach Wil– liams. "The success of a football team can set up an upbeat tempo for the entire student body." The Varsity Knight football team bounced back from a 1-3 start to win the District 3AAAA Championship and ad– vance to the state semi– finals for the first time since 1983 with an 18-13 win over Highland. The season ended with a loss to eventual State Champ Gooddard in Ro– swell. The Knights, who finished the year ranked 6th in the state, won five of their final six regular season games to win a dis– trict title for the first time since 1987. Junior Joaquin Smith led the state's quad A rushers with over 1600 yards and was named First Team All State. Senior Defensive back Bryan Welsh and junior lineman Kyle Burnett were selected to the Sec– ond Team. Welsh also was named to the North All Star Team. In all, seven Knights were named to the all District 1st Team. 1993 Del Norte Football Varsity chedule Thur . 9/2 Eldorado DN-17 Fri. 9/10 andia DN-24 Fri. 9/17 Cibola DN-7 10/ 1 Farmington DN-13 10/9 Carlsbad DN-23 at. 10/16 Mayfield• DN-35 at. 10/23 Gad den• DN-35 at. 10/30 Lac Cruce • DN-14 Fri. 11/5 DN-13 at. 11/ 13 ON- 11/19 ON- 11/27 DN-7 tate Running Back haray Ratliff is topped cold by Knights Anthony Chavez, Juan Flore and Kyle Burnett.
