< Swimmers Succeed at State The swim team had an impressive season. Both girls and boys had qualifiers for state. Sopho– more Melissa Edgar qualified in the 100-yard butterfly competition during the ftrst meet at Highland with a time of 1:09.70. Having qualified so early in the season, Edgar said, "I really didn't expect to qualify so soon. Now I would like to qualify in either the 100-yard backstroke or 50 yard freestyle competition." After six meets, the girls' teams consistently showed improvement, and the boys' team qualified in five events. The Knights saw their first overal1 victory against West Mesa on January 15. The Lady Knights beat the Mustangs with a tremendous score of 122 to 76. The boys also beat West Mesa with a score of 111 to 50. At the girls All City meet, the Lady Knights once again showed improvement as they ranked sixth out of eleven teams. This has been their best ranking in three years, moving up two places from last year. February 18 proved to be Del Norte's day at the UNM pool as all the qualifiers made it to either consuls or finals in their respective events. In addition, the boys and girls really all had out– standing swims. Junior Jonathan Edgar, qualifier in the 100- yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyles com- A Lady Knight strives for the win. Pat Baldwin comes up for air while giving all his might. petitions, placed 5th in state in the 50 yard free– style. In doing so, he accomplished his personal goal of, "at least making consuls of finals in ei– ther events." Senior Captain Seth Hurwitz, like– wise qualified in the 50-yard freestyle and fin– ished a respectable lOth in state with a time of 22:85. Hurwitz also qualified in the 100-yard free– style. In this event he finished 8th in state with a time of 50:65, missing his personal goal of breaking a :50 by only two tenths of a second. Both Hurwitz and Edgar were members of the 400 Free Relay along with seniors Stuart Pat– terson and Daniel Garcia. At the state compe– tition, all were able to improve their speed times by at least a second for a well deserved 6th place finish. Edgar additional1y participated in the Medley relay with Patrick Baldwin (qualifier in the 100-yard breast stroke competition) and Daniel Garcia to accomplish a 7th place finish. The Lady Knights were well represented by Sophomore Melissa Edgar in the 100-yard but– terfly competition. Edgar took 11th in the second fastest heat of this event with a time of 1:05:65. For the final tally of state meet, the girls scored two points in a tie for 18th place. The boys team racked up 43 1/2 points to finish 9th in state, 4th among APS Schools.
