The Architect's Vision of North Initial academic endeavor was challen}!ed by workmen i1JStallinl{ machh1ery and last equipment. The next year local fwpers headli11ed "North's rain" whenever storms drenched third floor ceilin}!s. Better waterproofinl{ broul{ht relief- Our mountainous backyard was leveled of/ for parkin!{ areas fmd a fitting athletic field. At the front , shrubbery and f7·ees were plarzted, low fences added along the walks. Then in the fall of 1939 a catastrophe struck. Everz though letters over the mahz erztrar1ce proclaimed this as "Bing– hamfotz North High chool" and every side entrance bore "B.N.H.S.," still because petitionin}! East ide resident felt that North as a rwme was inappropriate, we became East High-that is, until our Student Council held a pow· wow, went on the warpath to "Keep North Hi}!h, North II i}!h ," won a viet ory and raised a wa-hoo. A tzd, throu}!lz the 31ears down the towpaths of our Happy Htmtitzg Grounds we have found feathers markin}! the trails of our North High lndirms. Of the clrieftains one was Jim Barnes; another, Don J ones who originated "I'll always carry a red and blue chip on my shoulder." M twy went out carrying a peace pipe and dreams- War interrupted- Even• school activity focused 011 our Great Father's battlefronts- Gone now is the threatening cloud. But many did not return,· so, in fittin}! tribute this armi– versary year of 1\ or·th we have dedicated two brottze plaques to those fifty-four loyal braves who wW not join us in our traditional Alumni Day or observe with us this tenth birthday celebration in peace. lnheritor·s of the ludian tradition so rmsuspecfing/y begun by our first coach, Bob Redman, we celebrate this our tenth harvest with a feast recalling our powwows, the glories of our chieftain , and the prowess of our wan·iors, woven into the blue and scarlet bead of our tribe's JVampum. Along the usqttelwmw our tom-tom beals and all kuow our tribe- We are the redmen, the lndim1s of North High. 7
