Smoke Signals Would-be journalists having agitated for o school poper, Mr. Weaver okayed the project ond Miss Genevieve Heffron agreed to sponsor ot. Its mitiol issue of March '41 featured an interview with Alfred Noyes ond o "What Shall We Call It?" contest. North Star won. After two terms of mimeographed issues, student mterest justified an offset publication with a roto section one of its improvements. Mrs. Dorothy Ayers became sponsor, succeeded by Mrs. Helen Perkins and now by Miss Mary Conole. Dunng the war the North Star was sent to boys in service, published letters from them, promoted stomp sales and urged student victory gardens. Noon dances added to its revenue. Heavily subscribed to because of ots complete news coverage, the Nort:, Star continued in 1946-47 to publicize school projects and observe special occasions like St. Patnck's Day woth o green printed issue and graduation with a senior section, and so strengthened school sporit. Quill and Scroll ... -.#- Local chapter of Quill and Scroll received ots charter in 1942. For out- standing work in journalism and superior service writer, p:~otographers, artists, and busmess managers of the North Star and Wampum staffs are awarded the gold pin of Quill and Scroll. Ihikona Woth nearly 2, 900 chapters spread across the continent, all founded on the odeals of scholarshop, leadership, character, and service, the Notional Honor Society is the most respected organozation of its kind. Because it bestows more honor and benefits upon its members than do local honor societies, the odministratoon of North chose to affiliate with it in 1939 when the high scholarship of forty-six juniors and seniors demanded deserved recognition. Through the efforts of Mr. Maxwell Space, Miss Gertrude O'Connor, Mrs. Leta Weaver and Mr. Ronald Johnston, o charter was granted. The inductoon ceremony, now a traditoon, was adopted and on induction team from Oneonta initiated the forst condi– dates of North's lhikona Chapter. The name lhikona means "industrious worker." Members serve regularly as ushers, sponsors of dances, movoes, partoes, picnics, besides participating extensively in sports, clubs and all other phases of school life. Noontime Swing Time, fall talent show, went aver big with a capocity audience. A mid-winter hayride for members, o Valentine dance, Cupid's Cotillion, and a picnic at State Park in June hoghlighted tne social calendar. Plans far on interregional conference af Honor Society chapters had to be abandoned for the present. Scholarship being its first requisite for membership, the socoety voted to award to the hoghest boy and girl honor students of each graduating class on appropnate statuette, the first to be presented at the June '47 commencement exercoses.
