Binghamton North High School 1956 Yearbook (Binghamton, NY) - Full Access

Many months ago, when it was d e c i d e d by the Wampum Staff that this book should contain o nau– tical theme, there was a unanimous choice for our dedication. North's grid– iron commander, Gordon O'Reilly, who is perhaps best known throughout New York State for his impres– sive coaching record of 144 wins to 20 losses, is known as well by those a– round this port, for his love of sailing, boats, and all that is nautical. He is a member of the local Power Squadron, and spends many winter nights lecturing to nautical neophytes. Though formal education at Ithaca College or Syra– cuse University; where he secured his BS and MA de– grees, did not include one bit, relative to navigation, Gordon F. O'Reilly Page 6 or the sea around us; the cooch has studied every– thing pertaining to the nautical life since pur– chasing his first boat in 1939. Like all good pipe smok– ing sea-farers, he has pro– gressed a great deal since then, and today spe nds his vacations skippering his 24- foot sloop on Lake George. Mrs. Helen O'Reilly, first mat.:: , and crew of their sons, com– prise the remaining ships compliment. Yes, to North's number one man of the sea, we respectfully dedicate this yearbook • May he soon fulfill his ambition of sail– ing the inland waterwayto Florida. Good luck, fair winds and good sailir~3, Captain O'Reilly; it'sbeen a pleasure to be associated with you I
