The prehi toric day of the clas of 1961 ended on cloudy day in ptember, 1948, a we hoi ted our elve aboard the big yellow buses that were to tran port u to and from the "happie t day of our lives" for the next thirteen year . Deep down in the basement of the present junior high building, 1i Young and Mi s Haynes taught u how to tie our shoe and print our name -rnajor accompli hment which orne of us never did rna ter. Those were the days of the graham cracker break, nap-time, and a big chicken pox epidemic. Dick Landon and Judy Beaudoin were the cla couple, Loretta Gilro · had the Ionge t and prettie t curl , and andy Simp on drew wonderful picture of big, red circle . For fir t grade we moved upstair to the fir t floor and got to buy our lunches in the cafeteria, ju t like the big kid ! obody could reach the trays, much les carry them. heila Smith was the toughe t kid in the c1a , and a fight with her usually meant a bloody nose which never seemed to be Sheila' . In econd and third grade we learned to write and to read-"Alice and Jerry play. They play ball. The ball is blue. Alice and Jerry like the blue ba1l." George Cook became famou for his "etch- ing " which the teacher alway hastily confiscated. Judy Crotty and Don Parker were the clas couple. During fourth, fifth, and ixth grades we were bani hed to the Red Building where we learned about Pimwee the jungle boy and how to be pea and cabbage in the pring concert (the play took place in Peter Rabbit's favorite vegetable garden). For seventh grade we returned to the junior high and di covered the delights of changing cia · room and teacher for each ubject, eating "fireball " in c1a without getting caught, and combina- tion locker which were more efficient with a penny in erted in the proper place. It was lots of fun driving new teacher nuts, and our reputation pread a we perfected our techniques. Eighth grade was pent back in the old Red Building whi h wa entirely our . Obviou ly we were too tough for the junior high! It wa our own little \ orld. and the i olation helped unify the different groups from Ro Corner , Ve tal Center, Willow Point. and Little Meadows. Tho e were the day of "Fido" in cience cia s, the Three Mouseketeers, and Mr. ha' ' war torie . Jo Ann Mitchell and Jack Garvey were th.e cia couple, all the girls went in for the "Pixie" cut (their heads resembled coconuts- it wa really ugly). uddenly we were Freshmen! The seniors were ver old, very wi e. and very a)amorous- orne- time they were even nice to u !
