The decade has been one of great history-making events. Middle East peace was established by the signing of a treaty between Egypt and Israel. The Watergate scandal caused Nixon to resign, Ford to become the first non-elected President, and after the "76" elections, the saying "you can grow up to be President" became a reality when Carter went into office. Full diplomatic relations have been resumed with China. Margaret Thatcher was made Prime Minister of Great Britain. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee. SALT talks proved to be beneficial and Panama Canal Treaties were signed. Ayatollah Khomeini deposed the Shah of Iran from his throne. Fifty American citizens are being held hostage by Iranian students at the American Embassy. More than 900 followers of the Rev. Jim Jones committed mass suicide in Guyana. The kidnapping of Patty Hearst caused many difficulties for numerous people. We have had three Popes during the 70's. After the death of Pope Paul VI, John Paul I was elected. He held the office for 33 days. Our current Pope, John Paul II, is the first non-Italian Holy Father since 1522. His recent journey to the United States made a great impact on the world. Aviation in the 70's caused several tragedies. The worst U.S. crash in aviation history killed 144 people when a jet crashed collided with a plane over San Diego. This resulted in stricter flying regulations. 577 lives were lost in a collision of two 7 47 jets. Terrorist bombings killed eleven people at La Guardia Airport. Oil is now piped from Alaska through the United States. Oil prices have gone to almost a dollar a gallon, and gas has surpassed that mark and continues to soar. Gold has fluctuated to over $800 an ounce. Skylab crashed to earth and landed in Australia. The first photographs from the Viking landing on Mars were received. Three Mile Island made us aware of possible problems with nuclear energy. Science made strides forward - louise Brown was the first test tube baby born.
