Soviets invaded Afghanistan, and consequently Americans talked of boycotting the 1980 Moscow summer Olympics. The treasures from King Tut's tomb were displayed throughout the world. The first air balloon crossed the Atlantic. In the world of sports, Mohammed Ali won the boxing championship for the third time. Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run. Seattle Slew captured the Triple Crown. The 76 Olympics brought Nadia and Bruce Jenner, and in the 1980 winter Olympics Eric Heiden captured 5 gold medals for his fine speed skating performance while the American Hockey Tearn took the gold medal from the Russians; who held it since 1960. Discotheques boomed, skateboards came back and the C.B. radio bug bit millions. Legionnaire's disease broke out in Philadelphia. Woman's lib has been a major issue of the 70's; it has led to the possibility of women being drafted. Princess Caroline wed Phillippe Junot. King Hussein married Lisa Halaby. Donny Osmond married Debbie Glenn. Also married were Erik Estrada, Shoun Cassidy, and Willy Ames. The 70's gave us Farrah, Suzanne, Cheryl Ladd, and Cheryl Tieggs. New York City's power was interrupted for 25 hours by a lightning storm. The Chrysler Company obtained a loan before losing their business. The Son of Sam murderer was convicted. Television gave us several entertaining shows. They include Mash, All in the Family, Mork & Mindy, Happy Days, CHIPS, Starsky & Hutch, Saturday Night Live, Love Boat, The Dukes of Hazard, Dallas, Battlestar Galactica, Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Fantasy Island, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Lou Grant, WKRP in Cincinnati, Three' s Company, Mary Tyler Moore, Angie, Charlie's Angels, and many others. Movies have also been incredible during the 70's. We have seen Superman, The Muppet Movie, Star Wars, Star Trek, the motion picture, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Black Hole, Jaws, The Wiz, The Goodbye Girl, The Electric Horseman, The Exorcist, Godfather I and II, American Graffiti, Young Frankenstein, Heaven Can Wait, Animal House, Saturday Night Fever, and Grease along with several other outstanding movies. The 70's brought much sadness with the deaths of many prominent people. They include Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Guy Lombardo, Groucho Marx, Freddie Prinze, Joan Crawford, Arthur Fiedler, John Wayne, Hubert Humphrey, Howard Hughes, Norman Rockwell, Golda Meir, Edgar Bergen, and Mao Tse Tung. We regret their passing, but they will always live in our hearts. The major happening of the decade was the Bicentennial. It signified the 200th birthday of the United States.
