Our high 3chool experience began under :br. ..Helmkamp . After seventeen years of conscientious and efficient service as principal of Elmira Free Academy, Or. Albert B. Helmkamp resigned last spring. Recognized as one of the leading educators of Southern New York, Or. Helmkamp will be missed by students and faculty alike. Throughout his years as principal, he showed sincere interest in the welfare of Academy students, often helping them in their choice of careers and in securing scholarship aid to prepare for them. Throughout his administration he was interested in more than classroom activities; he recognized the value of extracurricular and athletic programs and encouraged extensive student participation. Ever since Dr. Helmkamp came to the Academy in 1937, he has been active in a number of civic organizations, including Rotary Club. He has served as a director of the YMCA, as a member of the advisory board of the Neighborhood House, and as a member of the Mayor's Committee on Human Relations. He also has been active in Community Chest and Red Cross campaigns. During World War II he acted as chairman of the Chemung County Rationing Board, charged with the responsibility of allocating fuel, tires, and food. Much as they regret the resignation of Dr. Helmkamp, Academy students are delighted with the selection of Kenneth S. Weaver as his successor. A popular member of the Academy faculty for twelve years, Mr. Weaver has achieved wide recognition for his contributions to state and national educational journals. With his educational training in the classical tradition and with his previous experience as a high school principal, Mr. Weaver is the logical man to assume the leadership of Elmira Free Academy. • and wa3 concluded under .Atr.
