Birch Football Susquenango League A ll-Stars 1966 Susquenango League Champ ions Greene's long journey to the championship started four years ago . When this year's Seniors \'/ere playing Freshmen football against a tough schedule , they never won a game . At the fall sports banque t that year , Mr . Harris , the Freshme n coach , made this prediction , "Although we didn 't win a game th.is year , this team shows great promise . I believe these boys \'/ill be the football champions of 1966 . " Nobody thought very much about this prediction until the end of the 1965 football season when the Greene Trojans were the surprise of the leag ue . With seventeen returning lettermen from the highly successful 1965 team , and a lot of promising up-and-comers , the 1966 football season at Greene Central was bound to be a good one . The team was lacking in weight with the average along the starting line at about 158 pounds . The bacl<field wasn 't much better off with an average of about 160 pounds . But the Greene Trojans were the quickest and fastest team in the le ague, and although light, they made up the weight in sheer determination and desire . The Trojans captured the 1966 championship not only with their teamwork, as they had no one individual standout , but also with excellent coaching from three very capable and dedicated men , Mr . James Consagra, Mr . Gordon Klumpp and Mr. Fred Merz . Not enough can be said about these men who coached the team and helped them bring home their much sought after prize- - the 1966 Susquenango League Championship .
