Norwich High School 1963 Yearbook (Norwich, NY) - Full Access
~unior Ifi ihrarians In September 1959, a group of high school girls who were interested in people, books, and the library, organized as the Junior Librarians of the Guernsey Memor– ial Library. This is a volunteer organization which makes better library service possible and which gives its members an opportunity to see how a library works. Miss Wedge is the Advisor. The Constitution was accepted by the Student Council in the club's second year. Students in grades nine through twelve may join the club, which has a maximum membership of twelve. Each Junior Librarian is scheduled for an hour a week at the library and is expected to attend two meetings a month. One is a business meeting and the other is an instructional period of the different library techniques. When a student joins the club, he must learn how to locate books, magazines, and pamphlets, and how to put them away. He must also learn how to charge-out books and check-in returned books before he becomes a permanent member. Every member puts up at least one bulletin board and helps with the behind the scenes work of getting new books ready for circulation. Each year the club sponsors story hours for the younger children. In general, the story hours have been very successful; and this year stories on film were used along with the traditional story telling. Each spring Junior Librarians go on field trips to other libraries. They have visited the public libraries at Binghamton and Syracuse, and college libraries at Harper, I.e Moyne, and Syracuse University. The Junior Librarians not only perform a service to the school and community but also receive useful training for possible careers in the future. Seated: Miss Wedge, Advisor; A. Strombeck, C.
