Ithaca High School 1977 Yearbook (Ithaca, NY) - Full Access

6 1976-1977 was a year of many new ideas and adjustments for the community of Ithaca High School. Mr. Albert Musco served his first year as the new principal. He and the student body were faced with many challenges. Mr. Musco met with many committees and people of the community. Although Mr. Musco runs the school with a strong hand, he is very personable and concerned with your problems. The entire lthaca community was faced with the task of the redistricting of the city schools. The high school was asked for its opinion by a questionaire distri– buted by the Student Association. The results showed that the school was split upon a decision. Since it will be a deciding factor in the education of Ithacans, it will be a long and difficult problem to solve. The Student Association not only acted on the redistricting dilemma, but also, upon many other issues that arose during the year. Vandalism became a major concern of the association. lt was felt that the students should have more pride in their school and have some responsibility for community property. Two new proposals were brought forth concerning the smoking area. Some students felt that the outdoor smoking area was not sufficient protection from the Ithaca weather. One proposal was vetoed and the other sent to the cabinet. For the purpose of accountability, the school's policy of department off-days has been revised to make the students and teachers more responsible to each other. At first, thls was opposed by the student body. It later became favorable as it showed positive results. The revision of the resource period program made it impossible for activities to remain "Seniors Only". The idea was not well ac– cepted but the eventual outcome showed an increase in profit for the snack bar. The year 1976 brought on a new president, Jimmy Carter. The Student Associ– ation sponsored a mock election in which Gerald Ford won. This did not prove true for the rest of the country. Mr. Carter has promised to put Americans back to work and raise the economy by tax relief. Many of the class of '77 will be af– fected by the availability of jobs as they will be moving into the business world. •
