Augusta High School 1960 Yearbook (Augusta, OH) - Full Access

Class History We, the class of 1960, submit this to be the history of our four high school years. We began our Freshman year with 21 members. Our officers were as follows: Linda Bender, President; Martha Michael, Vice– President; Mary Ann Mardis, Secretary; and Mark Cargill, Treasurer. Our sponsor was Mrs. Erma Leatherberry. Mark Car– gill was the only member of the class who played basketball. We gained Bob Barton and lost Russell Brown. Our Sophomore year began with 21 members and again we had Mrs. Leatherberry as our sponsor. Our officers were: Raymond Oyer, President; Elaine Leatherberry, Vice-President; Kenny Moser, Secretary; and Lois Stahler, Treasurer. Jim Berry and Mark Cargill played basketball. We lost Jeannie Wood, Bob Barton, Thelma Hawkins, and Dorothy Weekly. We started our Junior year with 18 members. Mrs. Carol Barnard was our sponsor. Our officers were: Elaine Leatherberry, President; Martha Michael, Vice-President; Mary Ann Mardis, Secretary; and Linda Bender, Treasurer. We lost Raymond Oyer and Elaine Sumner who were married over the 1958 Christmas vacation. Also we lost Linda Hawk and gained Bill Berry. We published the twenty-fourth edition of the A-Gust-A-Wind with Caroline Bennett and Bob Heylmun as co-editors. Mark Cargill and Bill Berry played varsity basketball and Elaine Leatherberry was a cheerleader. We produced the play, "Desperate Ambrose" with Bob Heylmun playing the lead role. The theme of our Junior-Senior Prom was "Drifting and Dreaming." We started our last year with 16 members. Our sponsor was Mr. Arthur Furey. Our officers were: Mark Cargill, President; Elaine Leatherberry, Vice-President; Mary Ann Mardis, Secretary; and Bob Heylmun, Treasurer. Mark Cargill and Bill Berry again played varsity basketball. We produced the play, "Grandma's Best Years"in which Caroline Bennett had the lead role. We sold Christmas cards, candy, stationary, and magazines to make money for the Senior trip. We also sponsored a St. Patrick's Day Dance. During the school fair Elaine Leatherberry was crowned "School Queen." The Junior Class honored us with a prom on May 14, 1960. Our Bacculaureate services were held on May 22, 1960, and our Commencement exercises on May 26, 1960. We conclud~d our history by traveling to Washington and New York from May 30 to June 5. Class Colors--Lavendar and White Class Flower--White Rose Class Motto--Out of school life, into life's school.
