Elder next met Saint Xavier in the Greater Cincinnati League doubleheader. Neither team could break through the defen e during the fir t half. Early in the third quarter Steve Apking, X quarterback, faked into the line and then dropped back to throw a beautiful pa to end Dave Boneau for 59 yard and the cor<>. The conver ion was good and St. X lead 7-0. Elder, bowing offensive life for the first time, marched down the field on line plays with Umberg making the tally. The con– version wa wide and the scoreboard read 7-6. On the following Sunday, Elder met the mighty Purcell quad in a Homecoming conte t. Purcell halfback Andy hiodi went up the middle early in the second quar– ter for 15 yard and the touchdown. The extra point being good, Purcell walked off the field at halftime wilh a 7-0 lead. Elder wa to hit the pay dirt early in the fourth period. Umberg's 30 yard pass to Ililvert placed the ball on Purcell' 20. Umbcrg bootlegged the ball around right end to the four. Paul, on the third quarterback sneak, carried over for the score from the one foot .line. A bad center forced Luen– berger to run the ball. Ilowever, he wa un ucce ful and the game ended Purcell 7, Elder 6. Elder met Roger Bacon the following Sunday. Thi game was to end the GCL play and help to decide the champion hip . Playing in mud and rain, the Purple and White recovered their winning way . \ \ 7 hen the final minutes ran out, Elder de– feated the Spartans, 6-0. On ami erable, rainy, Thank giving morning, 12,000 fans packed Elder stadium for the 29th renewal of the Price Hill Champion hip. Halfback Dick Ei e1e broke loo e early in the first quarter and carried the ball to " est Hi' 30. Sonny Doll drove up the center for the initial score. The Panther converted a recovered fumble into a touchdown late in the second quarter with mberg taking it over from the ten. Doll' conver ion was good. Although rain slowed down the game in the second half, it did not top Elder from coring. The Panthers moved the ball teadily up the field a Umberg carried the final three yard .
