The artist with his brush and the haiku poet with his pen abstract from the world's complexity and set before their viewer a single, simple object for contemplation. TO BE "A SINGLE DOLL WITH ITS OWN REAL SHADOW"-to stand alone in the midst of the crowd . .. to maintain one's own identity in an age of automation .. . to speak one's own thoughts and make one's own decisions ... this is the challenge for the student today. At Western Hills, with its crowded halls and the necessary demands on the student body as a unit, a pupil may be quite comfortable to drift with the mob, but he will find there is more satisfaction in relying on his own ingenuity.
If he searches within himself to find w~:::~~_.., what he enjoys, what he does well, to understand the importance of being he will find the happiness of follr..u•nn his own way, of being "A single doll with its own real shadow."
