1-48 "... and God bless my teacher, too!" A teacher is patience personified. A gentle molder of eager minds, a firm guid- ing hand for the will -o '-the-wisp. A persistent wiper of runny noses and tear stain- ed cheeks, perennial quarterback for the recess Wildcats, and, in season, all-star pitcher for the recess Buckaroos. A teacher is, of necessity, the Frank Buck of the classroom, ever on the alert for frogs in the pockets of mischievous boys, snakes in cans, and bugs in bottles. A teacher is the Clara Barton of the playground, consoling big aches in little hearts and proving with love and patience and understanding that a skinned knee isn't really the end of the world. Teachers must have the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of Job, the inventive genius of Tom Edison, the heart of a mother, and the batting average of Joe DiMaggio. Like Van Dyke and Rubens, Steinbeck and Maugham, a teacher is a creator of a thing of beauty-an educated mind in a young, growing body. A teacher must breathe fire into the pages of history, wage a one-man war to make Columbus and Washing- ton as exciting to young fry as Captain Vide~ and Davy Crockett. And, when all is said and done, their finest tribute comes when a little one defiantly clinches any argument with one simple phrase: "Well, my teacher says ..." Creoted out of o deep respect for our te11chers ~~nd the wonderful work they do, ond p ublished wi th the best wishes of HOWLAND PARENT TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION
