Their graceful motion. and oaring leap. held her in a grip he could not break. Th dance progr d and gradu- ally, the memb r. of the corp de ballet b gan to di appear one by one. Finally only th prima balleri– na remained on ta<Ye. Th light in th background lowly dimmed until h wa illumin d by on lone pot– light. Then, h b gan her variation. At first. he danced lowly, moving with an thereal liquidn . . udden– ly, after a lei ur ly r;Lis.wde the mu ical tempo qui k n d and he began an allegro. Rapid entrechat , bri k echappes and graceful jetes all blend d into one compl te dance. Janie' mu cle u n c o n i o u 1 y tight n d a h watch d the mo– tion of the performance. H r eye parkled and h r mouth form d a ilent ''oh" of admiration . The dancer whirled on and on . The mu ic ro in a ere cendo. The climax cam and with it pa ing the mu ic lowly faded . Th pot– light gradually dimm d to blackn 16 Richa rd Les'ie 57 There wa complete silence. Wh n the potlight again hone it r vealed th entire corp taking bow . Th prima ball rina tood in front with a huge bouquet of flow rs and graciou ly acknowledged the applau . A Jani at in her chair watching, he b gan to weave day- dream . On da he would tand in the potlight. h would be the grac ful ballerina r ceiving t h bravo of the crowd. "Janie! Janie! Good graciou, ar you deaf?" An impatient voice inter– rupted h r reverie. "It' time to go to bed . orne now. Be a good girl." Th bubble burst and reality again rear d it ruel head. Slowly J ani ' expre ion revert d to it old fro' n. h ighed and reaching out, flick d off the televi ion t. H r eye tra,·eled from the now-empty cr en to the floor, and came to r t on the crutches by her chair. Her mall fac tightened a he picked up the cumb r orne wooden piece and hobbl d defeatedly aero th room. The nur m t her at the door and , lowly, they walked down th corridor. Their foot tep faded. All wa il n t. The ho pi tal wa a Jeep for the night. The nur e had forgot– ten to turn off the night light and it burned on . In the urrounding dark– ne it wa a miniatur potlight on an empt chair. I tood in amazement And wonderment too; Dared I b the fir t This trange pell to undo? But timid I started, Fir t one tep then more· Th ice wa a smooth A a n w ballroom floor. My feet moved more quickly 'Till they almo t flew· That weet love of life– Then my heart felt anew. That feeling was in m All during the time, Which can't b de cribed, It wa o ublime. I kated and kated 'Till no more I could · So adly I left it Ob ure in the wood. But th memory of it I haunting me yet; And though it i gone I'll never forget.
