Stadium Spectators Y EAR aft r year thou and of Joyal Central fan ar on hand to cheer the Blue and Gold football team on to victory. A an avid Central rooter, I am a part of thi va t army; unlike mo t other fans, my concern for the \Velfar of the team is not the only rea on I attend the ball game . I al o go to pur ue a rather unusual hobby of mine. This hobby which I call crowd-watching, con ist of ingling out fan with omewhat peculiar trait . A a rule, the e fan fall into one of vera! di tinct categoric . Her are a fe\ of the mo t common type : Mr. and Mr . Hoople ar Doting Parent . Their on alvin i on th football quad and they are de– termined to let veryon know it. Every tim Junior' nam i an– nounced on the public addrc y tern, Mom Jet out a blood– curdling yell, whil Pop turn to hi neighbor and r p at that tim - worn cliche, "That' my boy!" When alvin is not in the game the Hoople alon~ with a ho t of fri nd and relation , k ep up a teady chant of "We \ant Hoople! We want Hoople!" Th Fru trated nnouncer th 6 John R •ybnik, '57 boy who fancie him elf a cro bet\ cen Mel Allen and Harry \ i mer. He bombard the ear of tho e around him with a running commentary of the game- u ual1y very inaccurate. The sole differencc betw en a Fru trated Announcer and a radio i that a radio can be turned off by flicking a witch· wherea the only time an An– nouncer i quiet i when he' eating a hot dog. The Overenthusia tic R o o t e r u ually quite harmle , turn into a rn~~man~ wh~ an u~u~y good pla for our beloved Golden Eagle occur . If they recover a fumble he will joyfully pound your back until it' black and blue. If they make a big gain, he may throw a hat into the air (your ) , and if they or he may throw you into the air. The Girl Friend continually an– noy her e cort by asking stupid que tion , uch a "How come that man in the knicker keep dropping hi handerkerchief?" or ··w h y doesn't th coach put Hoople in?" Actually h know more about foot– ball than h do he can tell you how many time Bronko agur ki wa knocked out of bound in 1938 but she i playing it dumb to show him hO\ feminine sh i . The Rowdy doe n't com to watch the game· he come to ee how much trouble he can cau c. His favorite pastime i sitting in the back ro\ and peppering fans in the lower seat with a wide variety of objects. When he row tired of thi , he often produce a rope and tarts a tug-of-war much to the chagrin of the people who did come to ' atch the game. The tifT breeze felt at many of our regional football game is often increa ed by the ince ant mutter– ing of the Grand tand Quarterback. He is forever criticizing the manner in which the coach and the real quarterback handle the team. The fact that h know nothing about football trat gy n ver enter hi mind. Thi fugiti e from a mental in ti– tution i the rowd Watcher. He imaain that he ee peculiar type of people at football game . In realit he i the peculiar one. He pend o much time looking for odd character that he frequently mi e a ~reat portion of the ball game. Merlyn Breunste in, '57 IMPRES IONS
