DECEMBER, 1956 PLAY THE VIOLIN Carmen Hendershott, '60 A few hours made the difference in a girl's life John Puhalla, '57 Luella looked sudd nl} at the violin and wond red if .he had gone mad. Her mind fla hcd back to the e\'cnts that had been centered upon it \' nt that had been o important to her. Lu lla had begun to take violin le on in her fir t year at Valley High. he had 10\ ed the le on o much that he had d cidcd to make mu i h r career \\-hen he fini h d high chool. To accompli h this he had pra ticed indu triou ly. But he couldn't ecm to get the "touch", that c rtain inexplicable feeling which di tingui hed a great violini t from a good one. Every year in May the chool held a concert, Ia ting two night , o that mu ically talented tudent might demon trat their kill to the parent and oth r intere t d per on . Luella had looked forward with eager anticipation to th tim that h might play the violin in the concert. But now he thought, " h I wi h I hadn't agr ed to play!" Her mind went back to mu ic cia . . . Mr . Blake had ju t an– nounced, '"Try out for the concert will b held in the chool auditorium after . chool." Then Mr . Blake had a ked out of curio ity '"How many in the cia arc going to try out?" Most of the cia s had rai d their hand . But Luella had thou~ht mi erably '"I'm not good enough; I'll never make it." o he hadn't rai ed h r hand. After cia , Mr . Blake had topped her and a ked, "My dear of cour e you're going to try out, aren't ou ?" "I don't think o Mrs. Blake " he had replied. 'You not try out!" cried Mr. Blake. ''I won't hear of anything o fooli h. You're coming to the audi– torium with me thi minute, Lu lla Carter!" "B-but" began Luella. " o but about it. You're coming with me!" Wh n Mr . Blake u ed that tone of voice ou didn't oppo e her. o Luella had tried out, and won. There seemed to b nothing to do but to agree to play. The evening of the concert, he had tried to practice the piece h wa going to play but her fing r eemed to be all thumb . Finally disgu ted with her elf and becoming more n r ou by the minute he had put the violin down. Th n it wa time to go to the chool. She had reached th audi– torium and waited h r turn to go on tage. At Ia t, he wa announced. A trange feeling hit her. he felt weak and haky and awkward. he took a deep breath, then said to her– elf "You can't back out now." he cro ed the taae and lift d the violin to her chin.
