Swoyersville High School 1946 Yearbook (Swoyersville, PA) - Full Access
Sports There is no question of the superb record Swoyerville has made in the line o f sports. For the past several years Swoyerville teams have held an unp.ualleled position as leader in the leagues in which she has been a mem– ber. Her team succeeded, last year, in win– ning the crowns in Football, Basketball, Base– ball and this year under the able coaching of Mr. John Yonkondy has ag.lin won the Lu– zerne County League Conference Crown for football but were defeated in capturing the North League Crown for basketball by a fast Wilkes-Barre Township team in the league playoff. Our Baseball team, under the direc– tion of Mr. Yonkondy and Mr. Chiampi, shows promise of adding another pennant to our already bulging trophy case. The Football team was paced by Butsavage, the so-called "half-pint quarterback" by the sports writers, ably supported by Popson, Gowisnock, Michaels, Reseter, Piazza, Volack, Deeb, Zannetti, Repko, and Saypack. Mr. Yonkondy can be proud of the "well-oiled machine" he produced in his first effort as coach of football at Swoyerville High School. In Mr. Chiampi's basketb.lll team, the sports writers predicted another winning team. None of the players outshone the other. In practically every game a different player starred- one night it was Gowisnock, another night Krakosky, and still another night Kole– sar and our up-and-coming Sophomore, Phil Sekerchak, le :t his mark in many of the games. These men were V.lliantly supported by AI Sekerchak, Jackson, Polk and Andrze– jewski. The boys had a powerful, fast team, but it did not survive in the play-off for the North League Crown, although we did have the best scoring record of any team in the Jeague. The baseball team h::ts 32 recruits and there is great promise of another League Crown. The hold-overs from last year are Krakosky. Tomshaw, Gowisnock, Kolesar, and Resetllr. The teams were feted at banquets follow– ing the season of football and basketball and all the football, basketball, and baseball play– ers with Coach Yonkondy and Coach Chiampi were treated to a trip to Philadelphia to see the basketbJ.ll play-offs at the Palestra be– tween Allentown and Homestead. Swoyer– ville's athletes made a great showing in its respective fields of endeavor. We, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-six, wish them success in encounters with their future opponents and to keep the banner oi victory forever flying over her horizons. VoLUME VI, No. 1.
