West Pittston HS 1954 Yearbook (West Pittston, PA) - Full Access
Our director, Mr. R. J. W. Templin, is the father of nine children, and yearly exercises fatherly care over more than a thousand students. Thirty-one classes have had the good fortune to graduate under his competent direction. All of us will remember his understanding of our needs, his patience with our problems, and his use of authority when it was necessary for the best interests of the West Pittston Public Schools. A graduate of Shamokin High School, Mr. Templin received his Sc.B. and A.M. degrees from Bucknell niversity, earning the former by taking four hours from his work as a stenographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad in order to attend classes at the University, and by working an hour extra four nights in the week to compensate for the time off. Later, he received the Tustin award in Psychology, Ethics, and Philo ophy. Previous to the beginning of his career in the West Pittston schools in 1923, he taught general subJects in a one-room country school in Northumberland County, physics in Bucknell Academy, and mathematics in the Wilkes-Barre City High School. He was principal of Sunbury High School, and instructor in mathematics at Lafayette College. Since coming to West Pittston, Mr. Templin has taught grad– uate courses in Education at Wilkes College, and, during the emergency training period prior to World War II, supervised Fundamentals of Engineering courses in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Teaching is Mr. Templin's chief concern. He is also very much interested in guidance. He has been an active member of the Kiwanis Guidance Conference, which for thirteen years has served hundreds of high school students throughout Greater Pittston. For many years he has tested and interviewed candidates for nursing at Pittston Hospital. It is with pride and gratitude that we, the Class of 1954, dedicate the Caravan to the leader who has helped make our high school one of the finest in the area. May he always find a special place in his heart for us, as we will always have one in our hearts for him . Left to nght: Seated- Richard, Mr. Templin, Mrs. Templin, Evelyn (Eck ).
