CARMICHAELS AREA HIGH SCHOOL OUR HIGH SCHOOL Our high chool had it beginning in 1907 in one room in what is now the Carmichaels Borough School with one teacher, Mi Mantie Strawn. Mis Strawn wa joined by Mr. Edward Rinehart the second year and by Mi Minnie Clutter the third year. lt wa a three-year high chool having it first graduation in 1910. The need for a building and a bigger teaching staff soon became apparent, and the first building for the student of Cumberland Township was built in 1910 near the southern end of Market Street. That building is now known a the Central Building. The new school contained three classrooms, an office, and an auditorium which had a seating capacity of three hundred. A chemi try laboratory wa added in 1919. With increa ed enrollment more classrooms were needed necessitating changing the auditorium into classrooms in 1927. In a short time this building no longer accommodated all the students in the area, and so the idea of a new building was presented to the voters in the 1927 election. They voted an appropriation of $200,000 for a new school. In the summer ground was broken on the old Hathaway Homestead which 2 was to be the site of the new high school and a campu of several acres. Finished in the spring of 1929, it contained twelve cla room , a library, office, science laboratory, and an auditorium which eated 880 students and a gymna ium which seated 800. With added space and new facilities a more varied curriculum became possible. The Industrial Arts Course was started in 1938 and the Home Economics was made available in 1940. Field sports were given a boost with the completion of the athletic field. In 1938 the fence, the retaining wall and the two center ection of bleachers were built. Lights were added in 1940 and the field house in 1941, completing the most outstanding stadium in the area. In 1962 Carmichaels Borough School merged with Cumberland Township School District. Thi union is now called Carmichaels Area School Di trict. The merger was one step toward further consolidation which is being planned by the State Department. This planning causes us to believe that we may expect a greater and more varied school program. Carmichaels Area High is looking forward to sharing the benefits of such planning.
