Arrows Place Third • ESD 1n Frustration marked this year's Arrow cage season. After putting together four im- pressive wins, the Arrows hit a slump in which they won only one of five games. Having recovered from this slump, they completed the conference by winning five of their last seven encounters. The Arrows finished third in the ESD behind perennially tough Sioux Falls and Brookings . In the finals of Sectional play, the Sisseton Redmen broke the Arrows 72-60 to represent this area in the State Tournament. Doug Stonebarger paced the Arrows in scoring with a 14 point season average. Rich Larson was next with I 0 while Bob Bleck followed closely behind with an 8.5 average. In the two pre-season games the Arrows rolled over the two Hills' teams . Belle Fourche was the first Arrow victim as the Broncs fell 55-37. The next night the Custer defense fell apart in the fourth quarter al- lowing the Arrows to pull away and win 43- 33. Tigner's men began the conference as they chalked up impressive wins over Huron 50-44, and Mitchell 39-35. However, just as the team began to gain momentum they skidded from first place to fourth place. Madison started the disaster, getting two baskets in the final minute to win 43-39. Sioux Falls likewise won in the waning sec- onds, 46-42, as the Arrows had to foul to get the ball. The Brookings Bobcats jumped off to an early lead and held it to win going away 59-41. The Arrows then snapped their "We goUa win, we goUa win, let' s go! " three game losing streak by winning at Yank- ton 46-43 in a thriller. But, Aberdeen drowned the Arrow spirits by coming from behind to win in the closing minutes 47-43. In the second half of the round robin schedule, the cagers rallied once more as they reeled off four consecutive wins over Huron 64-46, Mitchell 73-41, Madison 70- 49, and gave the leading Sioux Falls War- riors their first conference loss 57-56. The Brookings Bobcats made use of free throw accuracy as they cashed in 30 out of 35 to thwart the Arrows' hopes, 60-43. The Yank- ton Bucks, hungry for revenge, stopped the cagers 57-56 in an exciting game that went down to the wire. The conference season closed with the Arrows tripp'ng the Aber- deen Golden Eagles 59-53. At Section I play at Webster, Doug Stonebarger hit the apex of his high school career as he slashed the nets for 3 I points and snared many rebounds as he led the Arrows past the Milbank crew 81-61. In the finals the Sisseton quintet displayed tremendous ball-hawking and shooting abi ities as they handily disposed of the Arrows, 72-60. Basketbal is a favorite sport of the fans at WHS. This year's Arrows certainly did not fall short when it came to exciting, thrill- packed action. The Arrows added so much to our school life, that even though they experienced some disappointing losses, their flaming victories made every student proud of his school, WHS. " Let' s get thai ball and fight! "
